For the Collections theme at DPS this week, I delved into my old stamp collection, from when I was a kid. This is one of the oldest stamps I have: an 1887 Washington 2 cent. I also have one from 1883, but it didn't photograph as well due to a dark postmark.

Our raintree is full of bees right now, thanks to the yellow flowers all over it. I tried to get some bee macros with my new lens, but most were too blurry thanks to movement of the bees and the breeze blowing the tree around. I did, however, get this decent shot. Too bad the bee is mooning me!

We took a drive down to St. Pete today to check out Sunken Gardens, so I could get in some practice with the new lens. Since I didn't bring my tripod (I felt silly dragging it to a tourist attraction), most of the macro photos were a little fuzzy. That'll learn me! But the flamingo exhibit was cool, and I got some good shots of the birds, so here's my favorite flamingo photo.

The space shuttle Discovery launched at midnight last night/today, so I went outside to take some photos. Luckily, the sky was crystal clear, so we had a good view of the flame trail as it went up and eventually separated the booster rockets. Here's a collage of the process.

Fuzzy likes to sit on our windowsills when it rains, because the overhang keeps him dry. He's so used to our cats that he didn't even flinch when Buffy jumped up there to see what he was looking at. (It probably doesn't hurt that she's his sister, eitehr.)

For only $4, I made this bean bag for myself to use as a DIY camera stabilizer. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but it looks like it will work pretty well. And if it doesn't, I'm not out much money!

Ana was curled up in this box today, so I was trying to get some good shots of her, when her sister, Kate, came over and laid down next to her. Perfect! Since the light was low, I had to use a low f-stop, keeping Kate out of focus, but I'm still happy with the result.

You never know where you'll find something pretty. I spotted this gorgeous hibiscus plant in the garden department of Home Depot today. It had the biggest, prettiest pink flowers. Bigger than I think I saw in Hawaii, even!

This is a black basalt (I think) statue we bought from an alabaster shop in Luxor, Egypt. It's hand-carved and one of my favorite souvenirs from the trip.

I made a DIY lightbox (from this site) today and was trying various objects in it. This is a 7UP bottle I brought back from Egypt a few years ago. I'm still working out the kinks, and realizing I need brighter lights to get the white background to look white, but it's working pretty well so far.Outtakes: (My cat, Buffy, decided to help me out.)

My cat, Kate, has a very strange eating habit: she eats with her fingers. When we feed her canned food, rather than stick her face in the bowl to eat, she sticks her foot in and uses her claws to pick it out a piece at a time, then either brings it up to her mouth or drops it on the floor and eats it there. She's weird.

While photographing a peace lily plant out by our pool, I got down on the ground to see if I could find a better angle. When I looked up, I discovered this lily flower all tucked underneath one of the leaves, totally hidden from sight when had been standing.

Today, the Space Shuttle Endeavour was finally able to launch for a 16-day trip to the ISS. Since I live on the west coast of the Florida, I can usually see the launch from my driveway. It's not incredibly close, but sometime it's still impressive. Today, the shuttle must have been traveling away from us, because it leaned more on the side of looking like a large jet trail than a space shuttle

My cat, Princess, is weirdly obsessed with our kitchen faucet. Whenever she hears it running, she dashes in and jumps up on the counter to watch it. She particularly likes to watch if we let it stay at a drip or slow drizzle. She's very odd.

This pocketwatch once belonged to my great grandfather, who died in 1920, when my grandmother was only 18 months old. He was killed in a fall while working in an oil field, and when they recovered his body, they found that his watch had stopped. It was later given to my grandmother, as a memento of the father she never got to know, and when she died earlier this year, it passed down to my mother

I wanted to get some fireworks shots today, in honor of the 4th. It's been raining on and off all day here, so once it stopped, I went outside to see what I could find to photograph. While zooming in on these white flowers, I realized there were bugs swarming all over them. Photo is a little blurry, due to shooting handheld with high zoom and a breeze moving the flower.
